A one-flat house occupied by Andrew Narine on Grand Sand Road, Soesdyke was razed yesterday morning when a girl reportedly attempted to refill a kerosene stove while it was still lit.
Sources said that the bottle which the girl took to refill the stove contained gasoline, and not kerosene as the girl thought. Someone apparently went to buy kerosene and returned with gasoline instead.
As she poured the gasoline into the stove, there was an explosion. She plunged through the window to escape the spreading flames.
Her other two siblings, an older sister who sustained minor burns, and a younger brother, then ran out of the house, the boy clad only in his underwear.
An eyewitness said that the fire was so intense that even clothes hanging on the line outside were burnt.
There are five children in the family. Two were at school when the fire broke out.
According to Andrew Narine, the children’s father, he got a call from his wife, Patricia Narine, while he was at work, telling him about the fire. He rushed home to find the fire service battling the blaze.
The police were also on the scene, and took statements from the family.
The elder Narine said that his family lost everything. He added that the house was being rented from an individual who resides in Kuru Kuru. He said that efforts to reach this individual yesterday proved futile.
Patricia Narine works for pilot Mike Charles, who explained to this newspaper that he was taking it upon himself to find the family somewhere to stay for the time being.
