A high level Parliamentary delegation from the neighbouring country of Brazil is presently visiting Guyana.
The group of Parliamentarians, headed by Senator Heraclito Fortes, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Parliament of Brazil, yesterday met with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ralph Ramkarran, and several Members of Parliament.
Raphael Trotman, Leader of the Alliance For Change, and the People’s National Congress Reform’s Aubrey Norton were also among those present at the discussions which took place at Parliament Buildings.
The PPP/C was represented by Moses Nagamootoo, Anil Nandlall, Bibi Shadick and Dharamkumar Seeraj.
According to Senator Fortes, the visit to Guyana was in keeping with Brazil’s concept of ‘International Parliamentary Diplomacy’, established to strengthen relations between Brazil and other countries through positive dialogue among Parliamentarians of different countries.
Speaker Ramkarran said that the discussions centred around relations between the two countries. “Such exchanges are necessary to improve and extend the work of Parliament,” he explained.
“The meeting also presented an opportunity to examine the ideas and development of the international Parliamentary diplomacy policy undertaken by the Brazilian legislative body”.
AFC Leader Raphael Trotman said that last year he wrote the Speaker expressing the need to have such Parliamentary exchanges, and, as such, his party welcomed the initiative.
He said that he was looking forward to the planned return visit by Parliamentarians of Guyana to Brazil.
The PNCR representative, Aubrey Norton, said his party historically accepted the important role Brazil has played in maintaining the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Guyana.
He added that, “The PNC/R is aware of Brazil’s development from an underdeveloped country to its present state of being one of the world’s most industrialized. In this regard, the role of Brazil cannot be underestimated, especially in the critical area of foreign policy in the region”. Mr. Norton also supported the move.
