In what was truly an exciting afternoon of football yesterday at the Banks DIH ground Thirst Park, Sunburst Camptown and Fruta Conquerors booked a date in the final of the inaugural Courts Pee Wee Championship, following semi-final rivalry.
Both matches went the full distance, ending 0-0 after regulation and extra time and had to be decided by penalty kicks.
And even at this stage it was very tight. Camptown endured a game Beacon to record a 3-2 triumph after the initial 5 kicks, while Conquerors were pushed to the brink by Strike Again (SA) winning on sudden death kicks 1-0 after being tied 2-2 at the end of the first 5.
In the Camptown/Beacon match-up, both teams enjoyed some good moments but neither team were able to take as many shots as they could have on goal.
Both sides were good in defence and provided the crowd with some entertaining football. But it was the Sunburst team that prevailed in the end.
Makeshift goalkeeper, Captain Ozeal Small did an excellent job between the uprights and actually saved the final shot that gave his team a place in the championship match against their Fruta rivals.
Small had earlier scored Camptown’s second goal, Lezon Lord and Jason Williams the other players to score.
Beacon too, had their top goal scorer, who is also the leading marksman of the competition to date, Kerron Heywood, taking over duties between the uprights.
He too scored on his second attempt after the referee ruled that Small, moved off his line before the first shot was taken.
Esan Liverpool was the other player scoring for Beacon but it was not good enough and they had to settle for a chance to play in the 3rd and 4th place match against SA.
The Conquerors/SA clash which set the tone for the second game was also a tight match up with both teams showing that they can handle themselves very well.
But again, the Fruta boys proved that they were endowed with the staying power and concentration to advance to the championship match which will be contested on Thursday evening at the same venue.
The hero for Conquerors was Romeldo Fraser who fired the ball past the outstretched hands of SA’s custodian Jaleel Hamilton to the cheers and joy of his teammates after Strike Again missed their first attempt.
Scoring for the winners in the 2-2 tie were Joel Richman and Kareem Sanmoogan, the 1st and 5th shots. Strike Again scored their 1st as well as their 3rd kicks.
The grand finale and third place matches as well as a supporting game will all be contested on Thursday after which the presentation of prizes will be made by representatives of the sponsors, Courts.
