The Ministry of Home Affairs is studying possible legislation that will make it mandatory for all hire cars and taxis to be painted in one colour.
This, according to Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, is one of the measures being contemplated to stem the prevalence of carjackings, which has been plaguing the nation for several years.
Rohee said that in addition to the colour scheme, the authorities are looking at having these vehicles remodeled locally in such a way to protect drivers from miscreant passengers.
Several hire cars drivers have been held at gunpoint by their passengers, who relieve them of cash and other valuables and in several cases their vehicles.
The administration is also looking at prohibiting passengers of hire cars from traveling in the front seat of the vehicles.
“Appropriate legislation and order with respect to number plates and driver’s licence are currently under consideration,” the Minister said.
