-Returns Thursday from Penn Relays
Following the rescheduling of the Boyce and Jefford Relay Festival and Family Fun Day set for Sunday at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, Hopetown Flames Athletics Club has been confirmed to compete at the prestigious
meet.
The West Coast Berbice-based Hopetown Flames is currently at the Penn Relays in the United States of America, and would have missed the local competition as a result if it was held as per scheduled last Sunday.
However, the new date of the meet gives the opportunity to the club to participate in the meet. It has confirmed its participation after learning of the new date of the Boyce/Jefford Relay Festival this Sunday at the same venue.
One of the Coaches of the Flames Club, Keisha Burnette, a former national athlete, and schools’ champion, called Chairman of the Boyce/Jefford Committee, Colin Boyce on Sunday to express their availability to compete in the meet.
According to Boyce, Burnette said that the club is returning to Guyana on Thursday from Penn Relays and would relish the opportunity to compete on Sunday. Boyce said that he accepted the Club given that they were written to before their departure.
Boyce believes that the addition is added competition for the already registered clubs scheduled to compete in the meet. He noted that the rescheduling of the meet is a blessing in disguise since they will have the opportunity to improve the competition.
The relays this year include the 4×100 (Male and Female); 4×400 (Male and Female); 4x200m Mixed Relay; 4x400m Mixed Relay; Sprint Medley Females (100m,100m, 200m, 400m); Sprint Medley Males (100m, 200m, 400m, 800m); Distance Medley Females (2400m) (400m, 600m, 600m, 800m) and the Distance Medley Males (2800m) (400m, 600m, 600m, 1200m).
Cash Prizes of $25,000; $15,000 and $10,000 will be awarded to teams finishing first to third in the 10 relay events for a total prize money of $500,000. Five other Clubs have confirmed their participation in the competition.
