Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary defeated Essequibo Islands Secondary School (EISS) 6-0 to advance to the next round of the Digicel National Schools’ football championships which continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
EISS showed early promise, but it was Vreed-en-Hoop which went ahead with Alwin Kendall slotting home in a 21st minute after receiving a through ball. The goal lifted Vreed-en-Hoop’s confidence as the increased their pace and control.
Shem Thom extended the advantage in the 32nd minute. After gaining possession, EISS goalkeeper Dwain Retemiah threw the ball straight to the booth of Thom who made no mistake as he tapped the ball over Retemiah’s head for an easy goal.
EISS almost pulled one back, but Quacy White was ruled off side after finding the back of the net. The Islanders played aggressively, creating several chances during a good period where forward Wendell Osbourne forced a save from Vreed-en-Hoop keeper Shay Thom just before half time.
However Vreed-en-Hoop continued to dominate possession after the break lifting the tempo which forced EISS, which hardly had a shot on goal in the second session to defend for the most part.
Retemiah then saved a shot from Alwin Kendall as he made a run down the left flank while Brain Chapman sent his free kick over the bar from just on the edge of the area. However Chapman made it 3-0 in the 57th minute beating Retemiah to his left with a shot from almost 30 yards out.
EISS looked a tired bunch and Vreed-en-Hoop stretched their lead four minutes later when Akeem Pinder slotted home from inside the 18-yard box. Retemiah managed to save a shot from Alex Welcome moments later, but a goalkeeping blunder gave Vreed-en-Hoop another goal in the 65th minute.
Defender Steffan Webster played the ball into his opponents’ area, but Retemiah advanced in an attempt to clear the ball which found the back of the net after bouncing over his head, much to the dismay of his teammates.
Champan then netted his second goal in the 86th minute after receiving a pass from Akeem Pinder inside the area to complete the scoring. (Zaheer Mohamed)
