Yesterday at the National Trust building on Carmichael Street, a small gathering was present to witness the launch of a Heritage Exhibition as part of Guyana’s Independence Jubilee celebrations.
It was expected that Minister within the Ministry of Education Nicolette Henry would attend the occasion, but she was unable to attend due to a packed schedule.
The ceremony commenced with a welcome by Ms. Lauren Grant, the Conservation Officer of National Trust of Guyana (NTG).
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mrs. Nirvana Persaud then gave a brief overview of the exhibition and stressed on the importance of Guyana’s cultural background. She asserted that citizens need to help cultivate and preserve their customs and the “monuments of our proud heritage”. She indicated that there would be a one-week tour of Georgetown, as the city is considered a heritage site, rich with Dutch architecture and history. The CEO also invited the public to visit the exhibition which will be open until May 31st at the National Trust Building in Carmichael Street.
In the absence of Minister Henry; Chairman of NTG’s Board of Directors Mr. Lennox Hernandez was on hand to declare the exhibition open. He stated that the National Trust Board is responsible for a number of National Sites and Monuments which include the Dutch Heritage Museum at Fort Island. The National Trust is also charged with the care of Stabroek Market, City Hall, Fort Nova Zeelandia, Aishalton’s Petroglyphs and the 1763 Monument.
