Police were last night questioning a miner’s son and others over claims that gunmen in a car robbed them of 150 ounces of raw gold at around 15.30hrs yesterday.
Sources identified one of the alleged victims as Akeem Chase, son of prominent miner Brian Chase, and said that the alleged robbery occurred in the vicinity of Buzz Bee Dam, Craig, East Bank Demerara. This is said to be about a block away from Chase’s home.
According to reports, the ‘victims,’ who had just returned from the interior, were heading to Chase’s residence when a car blocked their path. Four men with handguns reportedly then exited and relieved the victims of their gold before escaping.
A senior police official said that investigators are to check footage from security cameras in the area in an effort to verify the account of the ‘robbery’.
