– Parents seek justice, want investigations reopened
One-year after losing her only child in a traffic accident, Land of Canaan East Bank Demerara, (EBD) resident, Yonola Davidson is still looking for closure and answer to the tragedy.
On July 3, last year, eight-year-old Gabrielle Davidson was struck down on the Land of Canaan Public Road, just a stone’s throw away from her residence. The child was reportedly struck by a speeding car while she waited on a minibus to travel to school.
According to reports, the vehicle which was driven by a Cuban doctor, flung the child a fair distance away from the point of impact.
The eight year-old was subsequently rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre before being taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she later succumbed.
Gabrielle Davidson, a former student of Craig Primary School, suffered a fractured neck, severe abdominal and head injuries. The girl’s mother related that she had found her ribbon and one of her socks a reasonable distance away from each other, at the scene of the accident.
At that time, the woman had lamented the death of her only child and expressed her intention to work with investigators to ensure that the law takes its course.
However, more than a year after the incident, Davidson says her wounds are still fresh and she still hasn’t received any real closure on the matter.
The child’s stepfather, Victor Henry, also lamented the loss. He noted that he is even more saddened for his wife, since Gabriel was her only child.
The aggrieved parents related that following the accident the doctor, who was employed at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, was in custody at the Madewini Police outpost.
The doctor was subsequently released on $100,000 station bail but the matter never made it to court based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, (DPP).
The woman noted that last Friday was her daughter’s first death anniversary.
“It’s been more than a year and we are still trying to get answers. All the police kept telling us was that the file was with the DPP and we kept checking with them but nothing came out of the case,” Davidson said
The woman held the view that the police failed to do a proper investigation. Now, the couple is hoping that the authorities would reopen the case since they believe that they were cheated out of justice.
Davidson said that she and her husband have since been in consultation with their lawyer, on the matter.
The couple said that they were advised to work with human rights agencies to keep the matter on the front burner.
“We were advised that we should be in contact with agencies like a Red Thread and so on. We have so many unanswered questions since the matter didn’t go to court it’s hard to find closure,” the child’s mother added.
