The absence of adequate funding has once again restricted the administrators of the Guyana Boxing
Association (GBA) resulting in just four local boxers making the grade for the Pan American Boxing trials slated for Tijuana Mexico from June 4 – 9, next.
Those selected for national duties are Dennis Thomas (75kgs), Delon Charles (56kgs), Dewani Lampkin (60kgs) and Jason Phillips (64kgs). United States based superheavyweight pugilist, Quincy ‘Biggy’ Small has also been selected and will join his colleagues in Mexico later this month.
Recently promoted Level One coach, Sebert Blake, will accompany the team as the manager/coach with able assistance from Cuban coach, Francisco Hernandez Roldan.
The boxers were recently encamped at the Andrew ‘Sixheads’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) and engage in roadwork sessions at 05:00hrs each day.
They are also tutored in the fistic aspect of the sport in the afternoons from 16:00hrs. Yesterday afternoon, Kaieteur Sport visited the training site and noted the boxers as they were taken through their paces.
They engaged in simultaneous sparring sessions in the ring divided into four sections. Seòor Roldon shouted instructions while pausing intermittently to make jottings in a notebook. He explained that he was merely keeping records of the boxers’ progress in regards to their effective use of combinations as well as their fitness level.
The Cuban coach said that the boxers are demonstrating remarkable aptitude but are still to attain top physical
fitness. He is confident that they will get to that point in time for the tournament.
Mr. Blake also shares similar sentiments.
He said that the boxers are applying themselves diligently to their tasks and he is very optimistic that they will do well at the qualifiers. The successful boxers will then move on to the PanAm Games scheduled for Toronto Ontario Canada in July.
Blake is well aware of the climatic conditions in Mexico, having accompanied Shondell Alfred in her aborted bid to defend her WIBA bantamweight belt. He feels that notwithstanding this anomaly, the boxers, once they arrive in Mexico in ample time, could become acclimatized before their respective fights.
Meanwhile, the administrators of the GBA are appealing to the business community for corporate assistance to offset the huge cost of the trip. Already, they have applied for the relevant visas but are still faced with astronomical costs for airfare and accommodation.
