Hundreds of students from the ISA Islamic Private School, and Winfer Gardens Primary were forced to evacuate their school premises on East Street, Cummingsburg, because of a bomb scare at the ISA School yesterday.
When Kaieteur News arrived on the scene, pupils of Winfer Gardens Primary had already assembled in the East Street Avenue, and only a few ISA students could be seen. They were being ushered away from the chaos by concerned parents.
Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officers patrolled the Church Street area, while police officers from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID), the bomb squad, and the fire-fighters had taken up temporary residence in front of ISA School.
Member of ISA Islamic Board of Directors, Wazir Baksh told this newspaper that sometime around 9:45am yesterday, the school received a call from an anonymous person who said “this is not a threat. Two bombs were placed in the school and they will go off at 12:10 pm.” The locations of the “bombs” were never disclosed.
Baksh explained that the police were alerted and responded promptly. The students
were then evacuated from the school, while police officers carried out a search of the school. The bombs were not discovered.
Baksh said that at 12:10pm, the school received another call from a person stating that the bombs are about to go off. He added that ISA administration staff treated the situation seriously, because the lives of over 400 pupils were at risk.
Shortly after the search was carried out, the area was declared bomb-free, and students from both schools were able to return to the scheduled classes.
ISA Islamic principal, Mr Akram Hussain said that as a parent, and as the principal, it bothers him that children will be sitting examinations at elections time. “Elections are only 60 odd days away, and I do not believe that things like this will go down well…I’m sorry that this (bomb scare) has started at ISA, because we are a private school, and a clean school.”
He is convinced that this scare is linked to the elections period, and is worried by the level of chaos he believes it will cause.
Hussain said this is the first time that such an incident has occurred at his school, and he is hoping that police can carry out the necessary investigations in order to get to the bottom of this issue.
