The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) had promised months ago to collaborate with the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) to
rehabilitate the water service distribution system in sections of Port Kaituma.
There, mains had caused flooding. Residents are claiming that nothing substantial has been done to date and this has stymied the construction of the roadways.
According to residents, GWI had stated that because of constant erosion of the soil as well as consistent grading of the roadways the pipelines surfaced and were left exposed. However, residents are also saying that the contractors who laid the pipelines in the beginning had done shoddy work which caused major hiccups for the Ministry of Public Works officials who are working on the roadway at present.
Residents are also calling on the Interim Management Committee to clear the roadsides where construction is being done since trucks and vehicles are parked constantly where work is to be carried out to develop the roads.
Meanwhile, GWI had stated that the pipelines have been in existence for in excess of 15 years and would have been disrupted due to constant changes of the roadways.
The utility agency had also promised to undertake, jointly, with GGMC for the rehabilitation works needed to rectify the situation.
“GWI wishes to assure residents of Port Kaituma that the plan to rehabilitate the distribution system is a priority, as every effort will be made to improve on the current situation. The company will also be collaborating with the Regional Administration in the interest of resolving all challenges with the water distribution system.”
Residents noted that the pipelines needed to be placed deeper under the roadways since constant breakages and leakage have caused several roads to deteriorate rapidly.
