Defending champions New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) not only defended their title, but took three of the six prizes on offer when the fifth edition of the Annual Berbice Inter-School Chess Championships (BISCC) was held recently at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School.
NAMS walked away with the top two positions in the team category as well as the top individual accolade. The players in the winning NAMS ‘B’ team were Kemo Daniels, Devon Kissoon, Shamar Hooper and Stefan Peters.
In the individual category, Junior Seepersaud of NAMS who finished second last year to Darwin London of Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) reversed the results on his archrival on this occasion.
The third place finisher was a surprise, with New Amsterdam Special Needs School (NASNS) (Deaf) student Rabin Munilall, outwitting the other players to win the third prize. Tournament Director was National Chess champion and coach Wendell Meusa who was assisted by Steve Leung, Dane Grimmond, Colin Bowery and Wayne De France.
At the closing ceremony Meusa stated that he had seen great talent and potential among the players during the tournament including 10 year-old Christopher Tobin of Eversham Primary who placed fourth in the Individual category and female player Jayshree Carpen from JC Chandisingh who played unbeaten, winning two and drawing one of her games.
Coordinator was Krishnanand Raghunandan who is the Public Relations Officer of the BISCC and an Executive member of the Guyana Chess Federation. Raghunandan who has been active in this sphere since 2010 praised the Department of Education, Region 6 for their support.
Trophies were donated by the Department of Education Region 6, Dr. Walter Singh and family, Deonarine Balram of the Balram Shane Store of Rose Hall Town, Tajpaul Adjodhea and Bibi’s Travel Service among others. (Samuel Whyte)
