As efforts continue to locate the missing crew members of the capsized Motor Tanker Swift Dolphin, investigators from the Maritime Administration Department, (MARAD) have opted to conduct interviews with survivors of the accident.
Last Tuesday, Coast Guards responded to a distress call at approximately 21:00hrs after the Guyana-registered Motor Tanker Swift Dolphin; capsized off the Coast in the vicinity of the mouth of the Corentyne River. Two crew members, who were onboard, were rescued while two others, including the captain of the vessel, are reportedly lost at sea.
According to a statement from MARAD, yesterday, investigators interviewed the owners of one of the vessels and spoke to the wife of the missing Captain.
The Motor Tanker Swift Dolphin is owned by Swift N.V. of Paramaribo, Suriname and usually operates between Suriname and Venezuela. The vessel was reportedly bound for Venezuela when it overturned.
The Motor Tanker Swift Dolphin is now a sunken wreck off the Coast of Guyana.
On Wednesday, Officials of MARAD said that in addition to conducting a search for the two missing crew members, the unit is also dealing with the navigation safety issues that might have led to the wreck.
According to Director of Maritime Safety, Captain Stephen Thomas, the vessel was due for an inspection this year.
Captain Thomas said that a mark has been placed on the capsized vessel to alert other vessels in the area of the floating object.
The cause of the mishap remains unknown, as the Maritime Administration Department continues its investigations.
