The law enforcement authorities continue to appeal to supermarkets and shop owners to desist from selling expired goods. They have also been warned against the consequences of them being caught in the act.
However, a number of Supermarkets and shops in the New Amsterdam Municipality continue to vend the expired goods.
Recently the Environmental Health Department of the New Amsterdam Mayor and Town Council (N/A – M &TC) seized a quantity of expired goods from supermarkets and shops in the community.
According to Head of the Department, Municipal Health Inspector, Ackloo Ramsudh, his department is on a mission to ensure that citizens within the municipality have access to quality goods and commodities.
The Department is conducting regular and surprise inspections at food shops, groceries and supermarkets and finding regularly expired and tampered products.
According to Ramsudh, his team is working to rid the shelves of harmful items but he is appalled at the callous behaviour of some businessmen in the township who are bent on breaking the law. They must have respect for themselves and the general public.”Time and again officers from the department revisits particular outlets, and seize a number of expired goods and products being on display with tampered labels,” he stated.
“When these people know that the goods are nearing expiry date, they can arrange bargain sales or something. They can also make donation to orphanages and other needy places. These people are thinking ancient in the 21st century.”
The Municipal Health Inspector is calling on the general public to play their part in checking products before they are purchased, or refuse to buy at those habitual law breakers business places, report any case of expired items or goods to the municipality or other relevant authorities forthwith for some action to be taken.
“Every consumer has the right to thoroughly examine the products that he or she is purchasing and ask questions,” he asserted.
Peanut butter, canned milk, biscuits, jam, mayonnaise and confectionery were among the items removed from entities across the township, having remained on the shelves beyond the expiry date.
