Several prisoners were severely beaten with bamboo rods after complaining about the poor quality of food being provided at the Mazaruni Prison. Allegations were also made against the Officer in Charge who has been accused of selling out the prisons produce and ration in Bartica.
“Imagine after these men get beat until they mess and urine up, the officer asking them if they still had any complaints about meals. The inmates had to say no. This happened on April 27, 2014 and if the prison administration denies it then the relevant authorities can visit the prison and investigate for themselves,” one prison source disclosed.
Adding that the generator for the prison was sabotaged for two days during the beatings, the concerned warder noted that this was done to keep everything under control.
Some of the inmates who were beaten were identified as Sean Smith, Collis Collision called Juvenile, Devon Bailey, John Brunette, O’Neill Jeffrey, Latchman Singh, Royston McAlister and Royston Grenville.
All the inmates who were beaten were chained at their feet and placed in solitary confinement because of making inquiries into their meals that taxpayers’ money supply.
Reports reveal many other inmates have claimed that they are being victimized and left at the mercy of the Officer in Charge who seldom visits the prison to execute his mandate impartially.
“These people up here more corrupt than the police on the road. When marijuana reaches the prison, inmates are beaten. I am sure the inmates don’t leave their cells to purchase such items and return. When persons are found with the substance the police are quick to visit and charge or the warders lock down inmates in solitary confinement. The warders must be investigated before the inmates,” one relative of a prisoner said when contacted.
Recently, two inmates were placed before the Bartica court for marijuana possession after being beaten by prison warders. Other inmates were also placed in solitary confinement. “In one occasion a gun was pulled on a prisoner to confess to something he was innocent of. The authorities need to visit the prison.”
“The prison officers also have a group of inmates catching fish to be sold at Bartica. This thing is all about profit and not about their designated duties. Imagine the Officer in Charge like he got more farming going on and poultry rearing for himself than checking on what is actually happening at the prisons. No greens or nothing proper is coming at the jail to be cooked. Most if not all are going to Bartica to be sold.
“Is only black eye peas that is constantly being served. The two prisoners who catch fish would normally return the ‘unscale’ fish to be cooked for prisoners and the ‘scale’ fish is going to Bartica to be sold.”
