…over alleged involvement with husband
A 26-year-old Mabaruma woman, accused of stabbing her niece several times during a dispute over an alleged involvement with her husband, was yesterday brought before a senior Magistrate charged with attempted murder.
At the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Eunita Marcellino, a resident of Hobo Hill, Mabaruma in the North West, stood accused of maliciously wounding her niece, Lynette Morgow, on April 8 with intent to murder her.
Marcellino who appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry was not called upon to respond to the charge since it was laid indictably.
The Prosecution, spearheaded by Inspector Michael Grant, said that earlier that day the accused, Marcellino, was imbibing alcohol and had started an argument with her niece.
Grant explained that she accused Margo of having a relationship with her husband and during the quarrel, she brandished a knife and stabbed Morgow several times to her abdomen.
The victim was later airdashed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). She is currently receiving treatment for the injuries sustained, the Prosecutor said.
The matter was reported, Marcellino was arrested and the charge for attempted murder was instituted against her.
Inspector Grant offered several objections to bail. He cited the serious nature of the offence and urged the court to consider denying Marcellino her pretrial liberty since the victim is currently hospitalised as a result of the injuries sustained from the stabbing.
She was unrepresented by legal counsel and did not ask the court for bail.
The Chief Magistrate, in response, remanded her to prison. The case will be called again for report on May 19 at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
