Thieves escaped with over a million dollars after torching open a safe at the Mahaicony Post Office early yesterday morning.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the thieves gained entry into the building shortly after 01:30 hours, by removing several louvre panes at the back of the building.
The heist was discovered when staff attached to the Post Office turned up for work yesterday, only to see both safes torched open and the money which they had intended to pay out to pensioners, gone.
This was the second time in the past three years that bandits had broken into the Mahaicony Post Office; the first time they were unsuccessful.
A source at the Post Office told this newspaper that the thieves had ample time to carry out their work since both of the safes were torched open.
According to the source only one of the safes had the cash.
From all indications the heist was the work of professionals since police investigators found no prints on the building.
The Mahaicony Post Office is located a short distance from the Mahaicony Police Station.
