Imagine driving along the road in your car and a tall palm tree falls onto your vehicle
and damages two sections of your car. This was the reality for Steve Persaud as he drove west along Brickdam, Stabroek yesterday.
According to Persaud, driver of PRR 8104, only last week his vehicle was returned from the repair shop. “Although I have full coverage for my vehicle I am baffled at what happened.”
According to reports, a live electrical wire which was consistently grazing the centre of 50-foot tall palm tree at the front of the Central Baptist Church, Brickdam ignited in flames. This caused the upper half of the tree to collapse onto the roadway, hitting the vehicle in the process.
“Someone from the church had reported that this electrical wire was dangerously rubbing against the tree and personnel from the Mayor and City Council should have checked the tree and chop it down,” a concerned citizen noted.
Public spirited citizens commended the response of 911 and the fire service when they were contacted. A fire engine arrived shortly and firefighters began to remove the lower half of the palm tree with the help of a chainsaw.
