The Supreme Court of Guyana has partnered with the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges Association out of England in a two-day seminar targeted at strengthening local domestic violence prevention agencies.
The London-based organisation and local authorities are scheduled to meet at the Pegasus Hotel today in a move that will see local magistrates highlighting the major issues faced in this area during the dispensation of justice.
The seminar will be facilitated by Chancellor, Justice Carl Singh; Mr. Mark Guthrie, Legal Advisor, Justice Section, Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division, Commonwealth Secretariat, London; Justice Margaret Ramsay-Hale of the Turks and Caicos Islands; Justice Shamin Qureshi, Director of Programmes for Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association, London; Mrs. Dianne Douglas, Clinical Psychologist, Trinidad and Tobago; and Ms. Karen DeSouza, Red Thread, Guyana.
According to the Chancellor’s office, the seminar aims to provide Magistrates in Guyana with an opportunity to discuss the major issues in domestic violence cases as they confront them in the execution of their duties; with a view to strengthening the administration of justice.
While the principal target group for this seminar will be members of the local magistracy, there will also be a special session for police prosecutors, probation, welfare and child-care Officers, NGO’s, civil society groups and other key stakeholders.
