Yesterday, Erica Lance and Marian Gonsalves appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where they were told that coupled with a $30,000 fine they will be deported immediately on account of the charges for illegal entry which were read to them separately.
Both women pleaded not guilty to the charges which alleged that on November 8, at Morawhanna, North West District they entered Guyana by sea and failed to present themselves to an Immigration Officer.
The court heard that when the women were apprehended in Bartica, they were asked to produce the relevant documents but could not do so. Hunt stated that the women were consequently charged with the offence.
Speaking through an interpreter, Lance told the court that she came to visit her child who is a Guyanese national. The 25 year-old woman stated that she does not want to be deported and highlighted that she had lived in Guyana for three years and has other children in Venezuela.
On the other hand, 26 year-old Gonsalves told the court that she is a mother of three and offered no reason for her visit.
Magistrate Judy Latchman cautioned the women that in the event they fail to pay the fine, they will each serve twelve months in prison.
