In an effort to ease the build-up of crowds at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), patients are being urged to utilize the services offered at their health centre before turning up at the Public Hospital.
The call was made by the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Michael Khan, who explained that the facility has been seeing over 200 patients a day, some with minor illnesses which can be dealt with at the various health centres.
During an interview yesterday, Khan said that advising persons to seek medical attention at the health centres would not only ease the build-up of patients but also avoid the long waiting time.
Khan explained that the facility’s Accident and Emergency Unit (A&E) is for emergency cases and not for persons with minor cuts, pains and rashes.
“More than half the people coming to the A&E should have gone to their health centres. They (patients) are flocking the unit and when they are not seen quick enough they get abusive.”
“We would look at a person with a broken leg and leave a person with a cut and bleeding for last. It all depends on the seriousness of the complaint.
“We don’t work with a number system or line,” the CEO posited.
Khan stated that early yesterday, at the Surgical Clinic, a man was very abusive to the doctors and nurses for bypassing his son and allowing other patients to the Doctor’s room.
The man claimed that he was at the health institute since 03:30hrs yesterday, keeping “space” for his son.
However, his son arrived at the hospital after 09:00hrs when his name was already called.
Kaieteur News was told that the police had to be called in to settle the issue.
The CEO stated that in order to avoid these types of behaviour, there would be an increase of “security patrol” in certain areas. “We can’t place security everywhere but we will increase the patrol.”
“It is uncalled for when patients come here and threaten our staffers. It demoralizes the staff who try their best to make sure the flow is normal and when someone comes in and threatens, it disrupts the flow,” Khan said.
