The Civil Defence Commission, in their continuous efforts to mitigate the effects of natural disasters that threaten Guyana, last week conducted the preliminary aspect of their natural disaster exercise, Exercise Connectivity 2013.
The exercise, attended by several government agencies including the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Guyana Red Cross Society (GRCS), was designed to test the various mediums of communication across the ten administrative regions of Guyana. During the exercise, contact was made with the various administrative regions via telephone, the internet, radio and fax in order to test the capacity, capability and functionality of the various mediums.
The Exercise Connectivity, funded by the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), comes in the light of certain aspects of the country’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) being rendered unserviceable during specific stages of hazard impact. Also, as a result of the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) being relocated to Timehri, East Bank Demerara at Base Camp Stephenson, there was a need to have the exercise carried out.
As an extension, other exercises will be held in upcoming August and October which are designed to test Guyana’s level of preparedness and response capabilities to various disasters. In addition, they seek to allow for evaluations and adjustments to be made to the existing disaster risk management plans, policies, procedures and protocols.
