The culmination of the 2011 Digicel National Schools’ Table Tennis Championships is set for today at 1pm at the Queens College Auditorium with the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) bringing the curtains down on what has been another successful schools’ programme.
With over 150 Players entered from over twenty Secondary Schools and four Primary Schools, and 300 matches concluded, the Queens College Auditorium, the former Mecca of local table tennis in the 70s will host the prize-giving ceremony for the tournament.
The opening of the Schools’ Championships was held two weekends ago with GTTA President, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, reminding all those present that the event forms part of the association’s commitment to the development of sport in schools.
Those in attendance included General Secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe, Assistant Chief Education Officer (Primary), Marcel Hutson, who represented the Ministry of Education and the National Director of Sports, Neil Kumar.
These and other officials are expected to return today for the Closing and Award Ceremony of the nationwide competition.
The Digicel 2011 National Schools Table Tennis Championships got off to a tremendous start as teams from flooded the competition from Bartica, Berbice with four teams (Berbice High, New Amsterdam Multilateral, Sheldon High, Skeldon Line Path), Linden with six teams (McKenzie High, Christianburg Secondary, Wisburg, New Silver City Secondary, Harmony Secondary, Linden Foundation), West Demerara with one team (West Demerara Secondary) and of-course the Georgetown-based teams, Queens College, Bishops High , St. Roses High, St. Stanislaus College, St Joseph’s High, Mae’s Secondary School, North Georgetown Secondary, the Business School, School of the Nations, Marian Academy among several others battling for honours.
In the Primary competition, which is a new category that the GTTA included in the tournament to attract players at a younger age, North Georgetown Primary, Mae’s Primary and St. Agnes Primary competed for team honours.
The tournament has the distinction of being described as the cradle for the GTTA’s development thrust and is a team-based event with each school being able to field a maximum of three teams per category; teams comprised of either boys or girls or mixed.
Prizes will be given out today in the Under-10, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 categories of the competition.
A release from the GTTA yesterday stated that the association was buoyed with the level of the competition and participation from the teams.
