A 46-year-old man after opening fire on Customs Anti- Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers was on Tuesday remanded to jail after he pleaded not guilty to three gun charges.
Baldeo Rai Singh, of Lot 19 Crabwood Creek Corentyne was brought to the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry.
The charges stated that Singh who was said to be a logger, on November 3 at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne while armed with a gun discharged rounds at Ashley Williams with the intent to disfigure, disable or cause him grievous bodily harm.
Singh was also charged with having in his possession one .380 Taurus pistol with eight matching rounds whilst he was not the holder of a license.
The prosecution revealed to the court that on the day of the event CANU ranks acting on information received, were instructed to Ganesh Sawmill which is also located in Crabwood Creek. The ranks on approaching the establishment noticed two men seeking to exit the building.
The ranks in an attempt to confront the men began to approach them when the men subsequently opened fire on the anti- drug ranks.
It was also revealed that a third man who was sitting in a car outside of the establishment also opened fire on the drug ranks but made good his escape via the vehicle. The defendant and the other individual were subsequently apprehended by the said ranks.
A search was conducted on the men and the gun and ammunition mentioned in the charges were found on the accused. They were later arrested and charged for the offenses.
Singh was represented by Attorney at Law Vic Puran who told the court that his client denied the facts of the prosecution. Puran claimed that the defence had no evidence and even requested that the CANU officials perform fingerprint testing and ballistic testing as to determine the recent discharge of the firearm.
The prosecutor objected to bail due to the seriousness of the offence in relation to the firearm and ammunition possession. The magistrate concurred.
Singh’s matter has been transferred to the Springlands Magistrates’ Court for a continuation today.
