As more initiatives are being developed by the National AIDS Programme Secretariat (NAPS) and the Ministry of Health to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in Guyana, last year saw an expansion in the strategic areas of programme implementation as outlined in the HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan 2007- 2011.
These areas included Programme Coordination, Prevention Care, Treatment and Support, and Monitoring and Evaluation.
It was reported that at the end of the year 2010, a total of 1,039 cases of HIV were diagnosed with females accounting for 52.6percent (547) and males 43.2 percent.
According to the Ministry of Health at the inception of the epidemic, more males were being diagnosed with HIV and AIDS when compared to females.
This situation changed in 2003 and that trend was maintained until 2009, when once more for the first time after six years, more males were diagnosed HIV positive.
Meanwhile, of the 146 AIDS cases that were recorded for last year, 58.9 percent (86) were males while 40 percent were females.
This was a vast increase from the 43 AIDS cases that were reported in the year 2009.
Kaieteur News understands that six of these reported HIV cases in 2010 were children below the age of four.
The majority of the HIV cases in 2010 occurred in the age group of 20-49 accounting for 81 percent (842) of all cases, a slight increase over the percentage reported in 2009 (80.5 percent).
There were notable increases among the various age groups, the most outstanding being among 20-24 years old, while the highest number of reported cases of HIV occurred in the 30-34 age-group which accounted for 18.6 percent (193) of all cases.
