Former World Boxing Council (WBC) Cruiserweight champion, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite will step into the ring for a bout slated for Russia on November 4, but while he is certain of the engagement, Braithwaite is currently awaiting word of the name of his opponent.
The ‘Big Truck’ rolled into Guyana last Tuesday night to attend to some private business and took time out to pay a visit to the offices of Abdools and Abdools Insurance Brokers to witness the signing ceremony of those pugilists slated to battle this month end in the ‘Thirst Park Affair,’ promoted by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC). He said that he was not entirely inactive and had stayed in the gym, honing his skills at the Gleasons Gym, Front Street, Brooklyn NY.
Fightnews.com also reported that the former world champion stopped Adam Harris in the first round in a bout last March in Connecticut. Braithwaite confirmed this and said that after some time away from the ring he is ready to resume his career and the Harris fight is indicative of what is in store.
Braithwaite clinched the World Boxing Council (WBC) Cruiserweight belt after stopping Italian, Vincenzo Cantatore in the 10th round. However, he relinquished that accolade to Jean Marc Mormeck and since then has experienced fluctuating fortunes, losing several key battles that caused his supporters to question his current boxing status.
Quizzed on plans for his future in the sport Braithwaite intimated that he is definitely on the final leg of his fistic career. “I am looking at approximately three more years in the sport before calling it a day,” he said.
The former world champion further said that he intends to regain a world title before he quits the sport. “I will be the first boxer from this country to win a world title twice,” he said. He estimates that he would be able to perform this feat within one year and regards the Russian encounter as a very important fight that should be decisive in his onward journey.
Braithwaite visited the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym yesterday afternoon and did several light rounds under the guidance of boxing technician, Maurice ‘Busy’ Boyce. (Michael Benjamin)
