There has been a reduction in the HIV/AIDS rate for the past five years with recent research revealing that there is a decrease in the number of persons being tested in Guyana.
Research also showed that there has been a decrease in the rate of death from this disease.
Dr. Shanti Singh of the National Aids Program Secretariat (NAPS) stated that over 350,000 persons were tested over a five-year period.
Speaking about the Anti Retro Viral treatment, she stated that it is one that is effective and working. The treatment is of high quality and is one of the best, not only in Guyana, but around the world, she said.
The research has also revealed that there has been less hospitalization for persons tested positive for the disease and fewer episodes of persons developing opportunistic infections. More persons are living longer and healthier lives, she said.
Dr Singh is pleading with persons who do not know their status, to get tested for HIV and AIDS.
She emphasized that knowing your status is better, since it will benefit you as an individual in the long run.
