Former head of the St Ann’s Girls’ Orphanage and popular Catholic nun, Sr Beatrice Fernandes, OSU, died on Monday at the St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Georgetown. She was 72 and had been seriously ill with cancer for the past year.
But in the last few days she began to deteriorate rapidly.
On Saturday Sr Beatrice asked if Fr Paul Martin SJ would anoint her. When he went to do so she was very weak and unable to communicate but opened her eyes when he spoke to her.
Sr Beatrice was a tireless worker involved in many projects and initiatives principally for youths. She was the architect of the YAM scheme that saw teams of young people traveling the length and breadth of Guyana to run religious summer schools for Catholic children.
Groups even ventured as far as Chenapau and Karisparu in Region Eight. SEARCH was another youth venture that was dear to the heart of Sr. Beatrice. Before Jesuits moved from Brickdam to Oronoque Street, Sr Beatrice was using the Catholic Catechetics Youth (CCY) building to run Hope in Youth – a very successful youth training scheme for school dropouts.
For the last few years Sr Beatrice was the powerhouse behind the St. Ann’s Home.
It was only in 2009 that the nun celebrated her golden jubilee, marking 50 years as a Catholic nun.
