When the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of 16-year-old Queen’s College student, Neesa Lalita Gopaul, continued yesterday, Ashram Tewari, was called to give evidence in chief yesterday.
Tewari testified about certain events leading up to the arrest of the two defendants, Jarvis Small and Bibi Gopaul.
Small, who is a gym instructor and Gopaul, the teen’s mother, are accused of killing the girl between September 24 and October 2, at Madewini on the Soesdyke Linden Highway.
The matter is presently being heard before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Pritima Kissoon, who is prosecuting the case and Senior Counsel Bernard Dos Santos were present at yesterday’s hearing.
The matter is scheduled to continue on July 13.
Neesa Gopaul went missing on September 23, last, and her mother made a report at the Leonora Police Station two days later. The girl’s body was found at the Emerald Towers Resort, on the Highway on October 2, last.
The teen’s disfigured body was in a large suitcase that was dumped into the Madewini Creek. Certain articles found in the suitcase led to the arrest of the Jarvis Small and Bibi Gopaul. They were subsequently charged for the murder.
A length of rope was wrapped around the body and the killer(s) had attached two dumb-bells, weighing more than 80 pounds, to the other end of the rope, apparently in an effort to weigh the body down. The victim was wearing a pair of black shorts and a multi-coloured top. Her passport and a bankcard were found with the remains.
A family that had gone to the abandoned resort to swim in the Madewini Creek made the gruesome find.
