In one of the most bizarre cases in recent times, local police have intercepted yet another consignment of cocaine destined for the United States.
Reports are that sometime around 07:30 hours yesterday, ranks from the Police Narcotics Unit intercepted a wheelchair-bound elderly woman who was on her way to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to board a Delta airline flight destined for New York.
Acting on information received, police managed to stop the car in which the woman was travelling, at Garden of Eden on the East Bank of Demerara.
This newspaper was told that the woman is paralyzed from the waist down and is in her late 60s. A thorough search of the woman’s person and her luggage by the police came up empty-handed. However, a further check of her wheelchair unearthed some nine kilogrammes of what appeared to be cocaine. The substance was later tested and confirmed to be cocaine.
Up to press time yesterday the woman was in police custody assisting with investigations. This recent bust further highlights the innovative ways being used to ship the prohibited substance. While some have been busted locally, others have managed to make it past, only to be snared overseas.
