Its Rodeo time again and all roads lead to the Rising Sun Turf West Coast Berbice, where the Rising Sun Rodeo Committee brings off a grand one day action packed Rodeo on Sunday October 31 beginning at 11:00 hrs.
The event has by now become an annual affair. According to president of the Rising Sun Rodeo Committee Inshanally Habibulla, “It will be a day full of fun with vaqueros from throughout the country expected to display their skills.” Habibulla told Kaieteur news that the idea of bringing the event to the coast will help those who are interested in the sport and have never seen the activity and are unable to travel to the interior to be able to see what a rode is like and participate in the fun filled and thrilling events.
Some 10 events are listed for the day including steer roping, bare back bronco riding, male and female barrel race, wild cow milking, calf roping, wild bull riding, and saddle the bronco along with the popular Tug-o-War event.
Habibulla said that vaqueros (cow boys) are expected from overseas including Brazil, Suriname and Venezuela to match skills with their Guyanese counterparts who will be thronging the venue from all parts of Guyana including Lethem and the Rupununi Savannahs and the Corentyne and they will all be throwing down the gauntlet against the West Berbice posse lead by Fazal Habibulla.
There is a Rodeo King and Queen competition and places are still open for more participants in these events and interested persons are asked to get in touch with the organisers as soon as possible on the numbers listed below.
According to Habibulla, “The cost of bringing the vaqueros is high, but they will foot the bill to have the “best” vaqueros on show.” He said that over $1M will be up for grabs in the one-day event. The Rodeo Committee will be footing all the costs, including meals, hotel bills, etc.
This event has now become a regular feature on the Rising Sun calendar. Sponsorship has so far been garnered from pacesetters Banks DIH Limited, Digicel, Hablaw’s Meat Centre and Chester Fry, Bush Lot West Coast Berbice.
Persons interest in participating in the days events are asked to get in touch with Inshanally Habibulla on tel No 623-4495, and 623-5453, Fazal Habibulla at Chester Fry Bush Lot West Coast Berbice on Telephone No 232-0232 or 6577010,648-6522 or Donald or Zaleena Lawrie on telephone no 225-4530, 225-4565.
