Three youths from the Buxton/Friendship area on the East Coast of Demerara have been committed to stand trial in the High Court for their involvement in the 2008 massacre of 11 persons at Lusignan.
Magistrate Sherdell Isaacs-Marcus on Friday at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, brought an end to the Preliminary Inquiry when she found that a prima facie case had been made out against Dwayne Williams, Mark Royden Williams called Mark Durant and Sherwin Nero for the January 26 slayings.
Another man Michael Caesar is also charged separately for the matter and is presently still before a Preliminary Inquiry.
The three accused were round up by the security forces months after the massacre and prior to the dismantling of the Rondell Rawlins led Buxton/Agricola gang.
No one knows for sure the motive behind the attack which saw a gang of gunmen invading several homes in the Lusignan Pasture and slaughtering everything in their way that moved.
The gang also took their brutality to children, slaughtering them even as they slept.
The crime, which preceded another multiple saying in Bartica, sent shockwaves throughout Guyana and the Caribbean and led to a massive Joint Services operation to apprehend the perpetrators.
In the wee hours of Saturday January 26, the gang struck, simultaneously kicking down the doors of five houses.
In 15 minutes of terror, the gang which numbered about 20 persons, all armed with rifles and shotguns, massacred their victims, including an entire family comprising a mother and her two sleeping children.
Among the dead were Shazam Mohamed; Clarence Thomas, his son Ron, daughter Vanessa; Mohandai Gourdat and her two children Seegobind and Seegopaul Harilall; Shalem Baksh; Rooplall Seecharran, his daughter Raywattie Ramsingh and his wife Dhanrajie.
Three other persons escaped certain death by hiding in the dark until the carnage was over.
These are brothers Howard and Roberto Thomas and Nadir Mohamed.
Several persons including the survivors testified at the preliminary inquiry and according to a source, there is a very good chance that the three men committed to the High Court could be found guilty.
