BATH SETTLEMENT, WEST COAST BERBICE – Alana Husain and Gangadai Mathadin emerged winners of the Aditya Kids Trust Foundation’s 2010 Essay Competition for Secondary Schools.
The two 16-year-old students of the Bush Lot Secondary School received laptops, each valued at US$400. The sponsors were Faizal Hussain of RNR Auto Repairs and Harry Singh of Harry’s Jewelry both of Toronto.
The activity was open to all fifth formers at secondary institutions between Mahaicony and Rosignol.
Kuldevi Mohan, a member of the foundation explained that only the Bush Lot Secondary students turned up on the day of the competition even though four other schools had indicated an interest.
The entrants were required to select one of three topics and to produce a 500-word essay. The girls both decided to deal with the ‘Advantages and Disadvantages of the Bridge across the Berbice River.’
At a presentation ceremony on Friday, 12-year old Darshanee Balgobin of Rosignol Secondary was presented with a plaque and medal for being the most outstanding student at the Resource Centre.
President of the foundation, Archie Mohan, of Hawaiian Arctic Inc. of Ontario and formerly of No. Two Village, West Coast Berbice, expressed gratitude to his supporters in Canada. According to him, the group depends on help from well-wishers in order to satisfy their ‘Investing in our future by helping kids’ motto.
Two of the Directors – Premchand Punwassie, of Jusmat Transportation Inc. of Ontario, and formerly of Port Mourant; and Tameshwar Harripersaud of 24 Hours Glass Installation of Ontario and formerly of Canje are also in Guyana.
They are here to celebrate the second anniversary of the foundation’s Resource Centre and to explore other avenues of development. The group is hoping to purchase a plot of land on the West Coast of Berbice to expand its organization.
Among services currently offered are computer classes and internet browsing for secondary school students, as well as a library facility.
Financial assistance is also given to offset medical expenses, for the allied arts and sports among aspects. Two students on the West Coast of Berbice were sponsored to attend secondary schools.
According to them, by next year a new branch would be established at Black Bush Polder.
The Aditya Kids Trust Fund Foundation is based at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice. It was established in December 2007 after the death of seven-year old Aditya Ramdhan, of Bath Settlement.
The Waterloo Nursery School student was sponsored to undergo cardiac surgery in India but died after the procedure.
The foundation was conceptualised by Canada-born Lorraine Kissoon and formed by Canadian businessmen. It is managed by a board of directors who are based in Canada.
The Vice – President is Mahendra Persaud of Bath Settlement. The other two directors are Iqbal Rahaman of IR Construction of Ontario and formerly of Dundee, Mahaicony and Nasir Ghanny – Management Consultant of Ontario and formerly of Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara.
The non-profit body is registered with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The objectives are to provide assistance mainly to less fortunate children. This aid can be had in the form of medical attention, social assistance, educational grants and the development of sports.
Though children are the key focus, persons of all ages have benefited as well.
