The police have launched a manhunt for 26-year-old Chetram Singh, of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice, who allegedly escaped from the Reliance Police station lock ups around 01:30 hrs on Tuesday morning.
In the meantime, two police who were in charge of the station at the time of the prisoner ‘s escape – a female special constable and a male neighborhood police rank- are under investigation and have been placed on open arrest, until the completion of the investigation.
Singh, who has been described as a known felon, was arrested last Friday after he was found in possession of a stolen electrical generator.
Kaieteur News understands that Baljit Bissoon of Reliance Abandon, East Canje, had reported his generator missing after securing it on his back steps, where it is usually stored. Police acting on information quickly swooped down on the area and subsequently stopped a private hire car which had three occupants inside. A search of the vehicle unearthed a generator tucked away in the trunk.
The men along with the driver were arrested and upon investigation it was revealed that the generator was the one reported missing and that Singh was the person who had placed it in the car. He was arrested and placed in the lock-up as investigations continued.
A routine check on the lock-up by ranks around 01:30 hrs revealed that the prisoner was not there, on a closer look it was discovered that one board approximately 4 to 5 ins was missing. The lock-up is said to have a double wall and some of the inner boards were reportedly missing.
This observation by senior investigators aroused some suspicions which lead to the two ranks being arrested. Senior investigators are wondering how the man could have slipped through such a small space.
Kaieteur News has since learnt that the escape was apparently well planned and Singh might have since fled the jurisdiction. It was also learnt that a sum of money was paid ($35,000) for his release and the escape was a concoction.
One senior investigator has also questioned why only the persons mentioned were at the station, “something must be wrong”, he wondered.
