Farmers who suffered grave losses to their crops, recently, due to a breakage in the sea defence conservancy at the Paradise/Jibb and Exmouth, on the Essequibo Coast, have fear of another flood that has been threatening, due to the sporadic threats of high tides.
One farmer, Mohamed Alli, of Paradise\Jibb, said that the main reason for the enormous overtopping of the conservancy at Exmouth\ Paradise\Jibb area is a breakage in the conservancy and the undermining of the koker at Exmouth.
Alli, who farms cash crops on a large scale, lost his entire cultivation to the recent flood, almost a week ago. He said that he suffered great financial losses.
Mr. Alli said that despite several complaints to government officials, including the regional chairman, Alli Baksh, and the regional executive officer, Mr. Sunil Singh, who both promised to conduct an investigation, they have to date failed to do so.
The farmer noted that others in that area said they never experienced a major overtopping. He said that he had never experienced excessive salt water amounting to two feet high in his cultivation.
Another farmer, Premlall Kewallan, of Exmouth, who also lost his entire kitchen garden to the recent flood, said he also depends on his garden for his livelihood and that this has been the case for 25 years.
Almost a week ago, residents in the Perseverance\Cullen were also affected by the overtopping. Residents in close proximity to the Perseverance\Cullen area also suffered major losses to both their cash crops and home appliances.
Farmer, Norton Conelly, who farmed for over 20 years was another victim. He was forced to evacuate the Perseverance\Cullen area until he saw a receding of the tide.
Farmers in that area are calling on the relevant authorities to intervene.
