– bag with $millions recovered
A substantial sum of cash, allegedly several millions, was recovered from three suspected bandits following a lively chase and manhunt on the foreshore of Weldaad Village, West Coast Berbice, late yesterday afternoon.
Public spirited residents of the village chased the men and flushed them out of their hiding places in the courida bushes, shortly after they abandoned a motor car at a Police roadblock at Weldaad and ran into the bushes on the Atlantic forshore.
It was then that the money suspected to have been stolen during a robbery on the Corentyne was recovered.
The trio was in Police custody and the motor car they were using impounded at the Weldaad Police station last night.
Reports are that the drama, which saw the mobilisation of public spirited residents, began around 6.30 pm, when Police manning a road block at Weldaad saw a white motor car approaching the barrier from the direction of Rosignol.
On spotting the obstacle, instead of approaching, the driver of the vehicle hastily pulled into the corner and then he and two others exited and began running away, one of them tightly clutching a bag in his hands.
The Police fired warning shots into the air but this did not deter the men as they ran into the bushes and disappeared. It was then that villagers who knew the area swung into action. It did not take the pursuing group long to catch up with the fleeing trio.
The residents recovered the bag which was found to contain the large sum of money and the suspected bandits were handed over to the Police.
A large crowd could be seen outside the police station up to late last night.
Investigations into the possible source of the money are ongoing.
