It was initially scheduled for a March month end completion but due to some challenges, the New Vendors’ Mall is expected to be ready for a grand opening next month.
At least this is according to Deputy Clerk of Markets, Errol Brisport, when he commented on the restoration works which have been ongoing at the Water Street location for the past few months.
The works were undertaken in order to enhance the appearance of the shopping facility and make it more appealing to customers.
In the past, some vendors, although they met their rental obligations to the municipality, had preferred to utilise the pavement since they were convinced that the Mall (formerly the Toolsie Persaud Mall) was too remote for customers to venture.
Vendors were approached with a proposal, which detailed plans of them having a more spacious environment.
The Mall was reduced to rubble three months ago and it was anticipated that the stalls would have been completed by the end of last month.
The vendors were allowed to ply their trade on the northern and eastern periphery of the mall as the work progressed.
However, with the completion of most of the construction, Brisport said that efforts have since been engaged to have the vendors clear the pavement, a development which is yet to be realised.
According to Brisport, the vendors are claiming that they were unable to comply with the request due to inclement weather, a situation he expects will be resolved by the end of the week following a meeting with them.
During a visit at the site, yesterday, it was observed that most of the physical structures, which are 10 feet square, were complete and several are already painted and made ready for business.
However, this newspaper has been informed that several of the vendors are not prepared to occupy the revamped facility until after Linden Town Week, which is slated for the first week of May.
A total of 177 stallholders offering clothing, haberdashery, greens, groceries and fast food will be accommodated at the facility when it is fully operational.
Municipal officials are optimistic that the rental of the stalls will serve to maintain the operation of the facility and contribute to the municipal revenue base at the same time.
It was initially anticipated by the officials that the works at the mall would have begun last December. However, the plans were brought to a temporary halt when some vendors filed an injunction against the municipality out of fear of losing their livelihood.
