The body of Asif Ali, called Budhan, 27, of Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, which has been missing since February 21, when the boat he was travelling in collided with another in the Lannaballi area on the Essequibo River, has been recovered.
The body was fished out of the water yesterday morning in the vicinity of Tampa Bay Island, on the Essequibo River.
A post mortem examination has been carried out on the body, showing that Ali’s cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning, compounded by blunt trauma to the head.
On February 21, two boats collided at approximately 18:45 hours in the Lannaballi area, some distance from Scots Landing, an island located in the Essequibo River, not far from Bartica.
The boat which Ali was travelling in was being used to transport farming produce.
The other involved in the accident was a speedboat.
The impact from the collision caused Ali to fall overboard.
According to the police, the two boats were travelling in the opposite direction at the time of the accident.
After the collision, the speedboat turned back to render assistance to the other boat.
Together, the remaining occupants of the two boats swept the area a few times, searching for the missing Ali.
Their search was futile.
