A male Chinese national was yesterday denied bail after he was charged with two counts of forgery.
The accused, 32-year-old Lei Dahai, made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Priya Beharry.
It is alleged that on August 24, at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, with intent to defraud, he uttered to a Police Constable one forged Republic of Guyana visa which was in his Republic of China passport, purporting to show that the same was issued by the Central Immigration Office, knowing same to be false.
It is also alleged that between November 1 and November 13, 2006, Dahai, with intent to defraud, conspired with person or persons unknown to insert one Republic of Guyana visa in his Republic of China passport in favour of himself, purporting to show the same was issued by the Central Immigration Office.
A third charge stated that between May 14 and August 24 of this year, at Springlands, Corentyne, Dahai entered Guyana illegally without presenting himself to an Immigration officer.
To all the charges the accused pleaded not guilty. He was represented by defence counsel Rexford Jackson.
Jackson in making a bail application told the court that his client poses no flight risk since he has very strong financial ties to Guyana. Jackson added that his client recently fathered a child who was born in Guyana, and he also operates a business in Robb Street.
However Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to bail. She noted that the ties the accused have are not enough. Bail was refused. The accused will return to court sometime later today.
