Thirty-seven year old Satyanand Harripersaud and 19 year old Varsha ‘Shelly’ Khemraj died in a smash-up Sunday night on the Bee Hive Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The accident which occurred around 22:00 hrs also involved a vehicle driven by a 24 year-old resident of Atlantic Gardens, ECD.
The police in a statement indicated that, “Enquiries disclosed that motor car PSS 9153 (driven by Harripersaud) was proceeding east along the northern carriageway on the Bee Hive Public road and motor car PTT 5270 was proceeding in the opposite direction.
The driver of PTT 5270 alleged that the other vehicle suddenly swerved into his path and collided with the front right side of his vehicle after which it careened north into a canal.
Both occupants of PSS 9153 (Harripersaud and Khemraj) were removed from the vehicle in an unconscious state, taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of PTT 5270 who was unhurt, is in custody assisting with the investigation; a breathalyzer test was conducted and no alcohol detected in his breath. The bodies are presently at Lyken’s Funeral Home where autopsies are to be conducted on Friday.”
