Den Amstel Football Club (FC) continue to put pressure on the front runners Western Tigers FC and Fruta Conquerors FC after holding their nerves to needle Buxton United FC 1-0 in the feature match of Sunday’s triple header at the National Track and Field Center (NTFC) at Leonora.
With the win, Den Amstel (12 games) are now tied on 26 points with Fruta Conquerors (11 games) at the top of the league table, while Western Tigers are third with 24 points (10 games).
Center Forward Gideon Payne latched on the a low cross from left winger Jamal Pereira to fire the West Coast Demerara based club ahead in the sixth minute of the clash. Despite good attacking football from both sides, another penetrating moment didn’t come in the remaining 84 minutes of the game and Payne’s goal proved the decisive strike.
It was a quiet game for the free scoring Den Amstel team whose goal difference of 20+ goals is only bettered by Fruta Conquerors FC that have a remarkable tally of 25+ goals in their 11 games played.
League action continues Friday at the NTFC with two anticipated clashes between table languishers Ann’s Grove FC and New Amsterdam United FC who will both be looking for three points in their bid to avoid relegation in the opening match which kicks off at 19:00hrs.
The feature match will pit current third place Western Tigers FC and the struggling Cougars FC from 21:00hrs. Admission to the venue is $500; women and children are free. Please see below current points table. (Calvin Chapman)
