DEAR EDITOR,
A parking meter is a device used to collect money in exchange for the right to park a vehicle in a particular place for a limited amount of time. Parking meters can be used by municipalities as a tool for enforcing integrated on-street parking policy, usually related to traffic and mobility management policies, but are also used for revenue.
In Guyana, the Georgetown metered parking system agreement entered by and between Mayor and Councillors of the city of Georgetown and Smart City Solutions Inc, was considered to be a secretive one, which caused a fiasco. However, the severe pressure on the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown saw the suspension of the Parking Meters business, a heavy blow to the parties involved.
Now that the right move is in progress, consultations with the Guyanese public for amendment to the clauses of the contract that also include reasonable rates, exemptions to Fire, Ambulance, Police and Military Departments, etc. what about the Churches, Hospitals and Schools?
I now look forward to a contract that is above board, so all Guyanese will accept a re-start of the Georgetown Parking Meter business.
Yours Co-operatively,
Parmanand Ram
