Four men were remanded to prison for a spate of robberies carried out at Cornelia Ida and
Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara.
Appearing in the Leonora Magistrate’s Court yesterday were Leon Williams, 24, of Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara; Jermaine Bailey, 23, of Lamaha Park, Georgetown; Campton Semple, 30, of D Field Sophia; and Orwell Softleigh, 25, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara.
Particulars of the charge against Bailey, Williams and Semple alleged that on May 5, at Cornelia Ida, while armed with guns, they robbed Sheela Puran of a quantity of articles to the valued of $443,000.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to them by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool. The robbery accused were remanded until June 5 for reports and fixtures.
The police said that four males entered the business place operated by a woman and her daughter and pretended to be customers.
Shortly after, two of them whipped out firearms and relieved the victims of their valuables before fleeing in a Toyota Spacio.
They discharged several rounds in the air as they were escaping.
The matter was reported to the police and ranks immediately responded and intercepted the getaway vehicle.
By this time, only the driver was in the vehicle after he was abandoned by his accomplices who boarded another vehicle and headed to the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
It was then roadblocks were immediately set up and the alleged bandits, upon noticing this, diverted to La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.
Williams reportedly panicked after seeing the police ranks and crashed into a culvert. It was Williams who reportedly confessed to accidently shooting one of his accomplices in the upper right arm.
Meanwhile, Bailey and Softleigh were jointly charged with three counts of robbery under arms. It is alleged that on April 29, the men while armed with guns robbed Neshan Khan, Anthony Bashir and Shameeran Rahim of a quantity of articles to the value of $348,000.
It was reported that heavily armed men stormed a store belonging to Bashir at Anna Catherina and carted of a quantity of cash and mobile phones. They also made off with a quantity of phone cards.
In addition Bailey was charged for being in possession of an unlicensed .32 pistol.
The men denied the charges and were further remanded to prison. Bailey will make a court appearance in the Wales Magistrate’s Court on May 29 in relation to the illegal firearm possession matter.
In June 2016, a robbery under-arms charge was dismissed against Bailey and Adam McDonald of Linden due to insufficient evidence as a result of prosecution witnesses failing to show up for the trial.
The duo had been accused of carrying out a brazen robbery at the Elite Mobile Cell Phone Store on Parade Street, Kingston, Georgetown on October 2, 2015.
According to reports, the men had entered the store around 14:00hrs on the day in question. One of them reportedly inquired about purchasing credit, while another whipped out a handgun shortly after.
They allegedly locked the doors to the premises, while the gunman demanded persons to hand over valuables. It was reported that the men carted off a quantity of high end cell phones.
Their getaway was botched after they crashed the car bearing fake number plates into a canal on Kingston –just outside the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary. Police ranks pursued and apprehended the men after noticing them acting suspiciously.
