Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan ordered a 34-year-old man to post $75,000 bail, after he pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm, when he appeared in a city court.
Particulars of the charge stated that on February 28, at Lot 45 Norton Street, Werk-en-Rust, Dwayne Abrahams, unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Colin Nichol.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, told the court that the defendant and the victim are known to each other. He said that on the day in question, Abrahams approached Nichol and chopped him to the head. The court heard that the present charge stemmed from a land issue between the men’s families.
While the prosecutor had no objections to the defendant being granted pre-trial liberty, he insisted on substantial bail.
Abrahams was placed on a bond to keep the peace until the completion of the matter. He was also ordered to stay at least 50 feet away from Nichol.
The matter was adjourned to April 13.
