The Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) on Sunday last staged another successful outreach programme for females and Under-19 players at Skeldon where the villages of Orealla/Siparuta dominated.
The main purpose of the activity focused on talent spotting with the aim of selecting female players at the Under-19 and senior levels as well as junior males to represent the Ancient County.
Following the training sessions, a female and an Under-19 competition was contested. Four female teams inclusive of three from the hinterland communities of Orealla/Siparuta participated. They were Flamingo, Sun Flower and Young Strikers (made up of U19 girls) and Black Birds from the Coast.
Among the U19 males were Young Warriors of Orealla/Siparuta, No. 53 Survivals and Line Path Jets. Both competitions were played on a round robin basis with the top two teams emerging to contest the finals.
In the female competition Flamingo defeated Sun Flower 2-1. After losing the first set 14-16, Flamingo bounced back to win 15-9 and 15-13 in the decider. In the U-19 category Orealla/ Siparuta’s Young Warriors took top honours ahead of No. 53 Survivals 2-1 in another close contest, the scores read 18-16, 7-15, 15-9.
Trophies were presented to the Flamingo and Sun Flower teams by Vishnu Super Store of No. 78 Corriverton. The MVP prize went to Rhonda Adams of Flamingo and she was rewarded by Movie Parts of No. 78 Corriverton.
A number of other players were also recognised for their outstanding play; Raquel Mc Intosh of Flamingo, Carmen Vanderburgh of Sun Flower and Alicia Welcome of Young Strikers all received medals compliments of Jerry’s Store of No. 72 Village.
Young Warriors’ trophy came compliments of Jermaine’s Boutique; No. 53 Survivors collected the Jerry’s trophy. Cleon France of Young Warriors was adjudged MVP. Shawn Peneu of Young Warriors and Andy Rohoman of No. 53 Survivors were both rewarded by Jerry’s for being outstanding in the competition.
Resource persons included BVA President Levi Nedd and former President Gregory Rambarran among others.
