The Windwards Volcanoes, on the back of 91 from 34-year-old left-hander Devon Smith beat Guyana Jaguars by a run on the Duckworth/Lewis system in their rain hit NAGICO Super50 cricket match at the St Paul’s ground in the countryside of St Kitts & Nevis yesterday as the event opened with four matches.
The Windwards, hunting third Regional 50-over title were bowled out for 214 in 50 overs with Smith falling nine short of his sixth regional one-day hundred. The Grenadian’s 21st fifty at this level was the mainstay of the Volcanoes innings and was supported by 22-year-old Vincentian Sunil Ambris who fell three short of his maiden fifty and his skipper Liam Sebastian who made 27.
Twenty-year-old left-arm-spinner Gudakesh Motie captured 3-32 on debut and got back up from off-spinner Steven Jacobs, who had 3-40 from 10 impressive overs. Heavy rain during the lunch interval meant that 10 overs were lost and the Jaguars were set 196 to win before another shower left the Jaguars, chasing a revised target of 124 in 26 overs.
The South Americans could only reach 122-4 in 26 overs despite a solid unbeaten 44 from West Indies Opener Assad Fudadin with the Guyanese Franchise needing 53 from 42 balls when a third shower
ended the contest.
Meanwhile, defending champions Trinidad and Tobago Red Force demolished Jamaica Scorpions by 84 runs. Batting first T&T Red Force made 221 with Evin Lewis hitting a run a ball 74 while Rayad Rmrit made 43.
In response, Man-of-the-match Marlon Richards snared 5-36 to help rattle the Jamaicans for 137 in 42.5 overs as the defending champions also took a bonus point for their efforts. Yannick Ottley was the perfect foil for Richards with 2-16.
At UWI ground in Trinidad in the other 09:00hrs game, Barbados Pride beat the ICC Americas by four wickets despite an attractive 73 from Guyana Alex Amsterdam who was last out as the students made 183 all out.
Man-of-the-match left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn took 4-40 while Ashley Nurse had 3-23 for Barbados, who reached their target losing six wickets on the back of a half-century from Jonathon Carter.
