Police Constable 22349 Eldon Williams attached to the Brickdam Police Station was yesterday crushed to death by a motor Canter in what some describe as a “freak accident” just along the Providence Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) road.
The officer was placing barricades on the road at the time in preparation for traffic control at the new Hits and Jams water world, for the Sand, Water and Sun (SWS) soca on the beach event when the incident occurred around 09:45 hrs.
It was alleged that he was struck down and run over by the said Canter. The driver failed to comply with signals to reduce speed. Constable Williams was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The driver of the motor vehicle is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Meanwhile investigations are being conducted into a fatal accident that occurred at about 01:45h yesterday morning, on the Railway Embankment at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and which resulted in the death of Shawn McPherson of Goedverwagting, ECD.
Shawn McPherson was an occupant of a motor car that struck a horse. The driver lost control of the vehicle which collided with an oncoming motor vehicle. McPherson was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC. Several other persons received injuries and are receiving medical attention at the GPHC.
