The planned football development programme organized by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club in collaboration with the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) for first form students of secondary schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje areas has been put on hold.
The programme which got started on Saturday 13th September and was expected to culminate on Saturday 11thOctober was stopped because a few hiccups have crept in the way. The programme was being conducted from 09:30hrs and 12:00 hrs at the All Saints Scot Church Ground. A one day tournament involving the participating schools was also planned for Saturday 18th October at the said venue.
Each school was expected to send 30 students, 15 boys and 15 girls and at least one teacher to participate in the programme.
The schools invited were New Amsterdam Secondary, Berbice High School, Berbice Educational Institute Tutorial Academy Secondary, Vryman’s Erven Secondary and Canje Secondary.
One of the main humbugs at the moment is that a number of students lives far from the school and finds it challenging to attend the sessions away from the venue on Saturdays at the moment.
The organizers are looking at different alternatives. Either to visit the schools during school hours or after school or have the school visit different venues closest to the school in the afternoons where the coaches will be available.
According to coordinator Neil Grizzly Humphrey- whilst the programme serves to introduce football to the schools, its main objective is to develop the players’ technique.
