Preparations are progressing smoothly for the Irene Benjamin 75th birth anniversary cycle road race which is slated for this Saturday, September 20th in Berbice.
The event which is being sponsored by former national cycling champion and overseas based Guyanese, Wilbert Benjamin and his Benjamin Sports Store in Berbice, is being organised by the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC).
The 60-mile event is an open affair and so far most of the top riders in Guyana have indicated an interest in participating with riders expected from Georgetown, Linden, Berbice and other parts of Guyana.
The race will be held in different categories. The main event is expected to pedal off from in front of the Benjamin Sports Store at Fyrish Village Corentyne and proceed to No 66 Village and back to the starting point and will see the winner racing away with a sumptuous $75,000, trophies and other goodies.
The veteran riders will cover approximately 50 miles with they are expected to turn back in-font of Nand Persaud and Company Limited.
The Female cyclists and mountain bike riders will cover a distance of approximately four miles starting from Rose Hall Town to the finish line. The BMX riders will cover approximately three miles, starting from Albion to the finishing line. There are eight sprint point prizes up for grabs also.
Mrs. Benjamin and members of her family are expected to be on hand to send the riders on their way and help with the presentation of prizes.
This is the third event sponsored by the family so far for the year. The race is being coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts.
